Eve SumskyBasket WeaverEve’s Weaves
One thing that always seemed important to me was that the ‘item’ that I was making would have a use or purpose. Basket weaving makes a great deal of sense to me as it gives me the opportunity tocreate something not only beautiful but that can be used.
As a basket weaver I enjoy exploring the different techniques of weaving, the variety of materials that can be used, and the old styles of baskets made in the past. From this I can create containers that are both beautiful and utilitarian. The more I weave and master my craft in the traditional styles and techniques of basketry the easier it becomes to let my creativity take over and weave new baskets using the old ways.
Originally from Chicago, Eve has an MFA in Music from University of Iowa and moved to Bemidji for a position as a music teacher in the local school district. Loving this northern Minnesota community, Eve is involved with Headwaters Basketmakers Guild serving on the board and numerous committees since its formation in 1990. Eve is Section Principal of the Horn Section with the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra.
