Corded Summer Fruit Tunisian Crochet Shawl Pattern

Just in time for summer, this charming shawl pattern is a great take-along for dining alfresco on summer cool evenings by the lake. Designed by 7-time pattern author Sheryl Thies from Madison, Wisconsin and crocheted using Interlacements ‘Rick Rack’, you will love the feel and drape of the completed shawl.

Overall Information:

Finished Measurements: 24” by 78” without fringe

Materials:

1 skein Rick Rack from Interlacements (100% rayon; 16 oz; 1200 yds) in color Summer Fruit

Size K/10 1/2 (6.5mm) Tunisian crochet hook

Size J/10 (6mm) crochet hook

Gauge:  12 sts = 4” in pattern. Exact gauge isn’t critical.

Stitch Guide:

Foundation forward pass: *Insert hook in next ch, YO and pull up loop (lp), leave lp on hook, rep from * across ch. Do NOT turn work.

Foundation return pass: YO and pull through 1 lp, *YO and pull through 2 lps, rep from * across until 1 lp rem.

Sc BO: *Insert hook from right to left behind front vertical bar, YO and pull up lp, YO and pull through 2 lps on hook, rep from * until 1 lp rem.

Corded pattern:

Corded Increase forward pass: With one lp on hook, working from right to left, ch 1, insert hook through next vertical bar from front to back as if to knit, YO and pull up lp, YO and pull through 1 lp, insert hook into next space between stitches, YO and pull up lp, YO and pull through 1 lp, * insert hook through next vertical bar from front to back as if to knit, YO and pull up lp, YO and pull through 1 lp; rep from * across row.

Corded Decrease forward pass: With one lp on hook, working from right to left, ch 1, (insert hook through next vertical bar from front to back as if to knit, YO and pull up lp,) twice, YO and pull through 2 lps on hook, * insert hook through next vertical bar from front to back as if to knit, YO and pull up lp, YO and pull through 1 lp, rep from * across row.

Corded Return pass: YO and pull through 1 lp, *YO and pull through 2 lps; rep from * across until 1 lp rem.

Instructions for the Shawl:

With smaller hook, ch 3. Change to Tunisian crochet hook and work foundation forward pass – 3 lps on hook. Work foundation return pass.

Work in Corded Increase forward and Corded return passes until piece measures 39” along left side edge.

Work in Corded Decrease forward and Corded return passes until 3 lp at end of forward pass. Work return pass.

With smaller hook, Sc BO all sts. Do NOT cut yarn.

Finishing:

Continue with smaller hook, sc along left side of work to stabilize the neck edge. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Apply Fringe: Cut 3 strands each 16” long for one fringe. Holding 3 strands together, fold in half. Insert crochet hook into cord, catch the folded fringe and pull through creating a loop, Draw fringe through loop and tighten.

Mist lightly to smooth and even stitches.
