DEEP ROOTS 1 – CALL FOR FIBER / TEXTILE ARTISTS

The purpose of Deep Roots 1 is to provide an opportunity for fiber/textile artists of Nordic American descent (from Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland) to visually express their personal connection to how they see, feel and/or experience their Nordic heritage. Artists selected will exhibit in Minnesota in March 2015 and will be considered for exhibition in Finland in summer 2015.

GUIDELINES FOR ENTRY:

Fiber/Textile Art:  The creation of fine art using textile arts techniques and materials. The materials do not necessarily need to be of fiber.

Types of entries accepted:  Wall pieces, fiber sculpture, and wearable art. Only new, or very recent work is allowed; no visible wear detected.

Techniques:  May include, but are not limited to, knitting, crocheting, weaving, felting, hand and machine stitching, and fiber sculpting. Pieces may include found objects.

Size requirements:  Maximum size is 19″ x 19″, and lightweight.  Exceptions to size requirements: Wearable art and fiber sculpture.  Wearable art and fiber sculpture need to be light weight, durable, easy to send and, if applicable, very easily reassembled.

Shipping costs:  The artist will be responsible for shipping costs and damage to the art in transit.

SUBMISSION OF ENTRIES

Pieces submitted:  Three (3) pieces may be submitted for consideration.

Photo images:  For each piece, submit three (3) images, of which one must be a close-up shot. Photos will not be returned. Only high resolution, focused, professional quality images, which can be enlarged for close-up online, or enlarged for an advertisement will be accepted. This quality can be achieved with most digital cameras.

Artist’s bio:   Each entry must be accompanied by a short artist’s bio and, in addition, a short, narrative story of the artist’s Nordic heritage (e.g. Great Grandma Saarinen arrived in Red Wing on a river boat…). The story is very important since it will connect to what is reflected in the artist’s piece/s.

Entry fee:  $15, nonrefundable. Checks should be made out to Common Strands and sent to:
7106 Birchview Road, Maple Grove, MN 55369

Submission deadline:  February 28, 2015

EXHIBITION OF WORK

Artists selected will have the opportunity to exhibit at the Dassel History Center Gallery in Dassel, Minnesota. Exhibit opening is Saturday, March 28, 2015.

Pieces at the exhibit will move onto further consideration for Deep Roots Nordic exhibit at the Kasityo Museo (Handicraft Museum) of Finlnad in Jyvaskyla, Finland during the summer of 2015.
